Community Clothes Closet marks first year | News, Sports, Jobs

The Community Clothes Closet of Westfield is celebrating a very successful first year with an end of summer bag sale. To make room for fall and winter clothing, continuing through September, customers can fill a small bag with summer clothes for only $1 and a medium bag for $3. The conclusion of the anniversary sale on September 17 will coincide with a church sponsored yard sale.

CCC is open monthly in the Presbyterian Church on the first and third Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon and the second and fourth Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The shop houses three rooms of gently worn clothing and accessories for men, women and children over eight years old.

The first year’s success has far exceeded organizers’ expectations. Many volunteers from throughout the community have stepped in to staff the shop and collect and sort the donations. Diane Scarpine, program director, says “the wide range of people who have given their time and efforts is amazing.”

Even though prices rarely exceed $2, robust support from Westfield and surrounding communities has made it possible for proceeds from CCC to assist individuals and families in need as well as the Westfield food pantry, Westfield ministries, and the Patterson teen library. CCC has also offered a popular free prom shop which will be repeated for the homecoming dance in the fall.

Donations of clean, lightly worn clothing are always welcome as are volunteers. Clothing can be dropped off during Closet hours or at the Methodist Church, Main Street, Westfield from 9 a.m. to noon on weekdays. To volunteer or for more information call 716-326-2643.
